Citadelle Laferrière

Perched atop a mountain peak near Milot in northern Haiti, the Citadelle LaferriΓ¨re is a mountaintop fortress built between 1805 and 1820 after Haiti’s independence, under the direction of Henri Christophe. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest fortress in the Americas.

The Citadelle stands as a powerful symbol of Haitian independence β€” built by a free Black republic to defend against any attempt to restore slavery. Its massive stone walls, stacked cannonballs, and dramatic mountain setting make it one of the most breathtaking historic sites in the Caribbean.

Port-au-Prince & the National Palace

Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, is home to the neoclassical National Palace. The “1804” displayed on the palace facade marks the year of Haiti’s independence β€” the first independent Black republic in the world.

Historic note: The National Palace was destroyed in the January 2010 earthquake. The photos shown here are historic and iconic views of the palace as it stood before the earthquake; they do not depict the palace as it currently stands.

Nearby, the “Marron Inconnu” (Unknown Slave) statue β€” depicting a runaway slave blowing a conch shell β€” stands as a tribute to Haiti’s fight for freedom.
